Let’s start at the beginning.  As you read the following questions I want you to stop after each one and wright down you answers.  Before you go on get some paper and a pen or pencil. 

Ready, Go.

1.  What do you want?  What is one of your goals?  You may have come to this page just out of curiosity but really think about it - What do you want?  No, what do you want, not what you don’t want.  This first step is important so I’m going to dwell on it for a minute.  If you said something like, I don’t want ______ in my life.  or  I don’t want to _____ any more. or I don’t want to feel this feeling ever again.

Turn it around,  what do you want instead.  This may feel awkward at first but do it anyway.  It may twist your brain around a little if you haven’t been in the habit of going for something instead of away from pain.  Don’t worry, you can get use to it.

2.  How will you know when you have it?  Specifically, what will you see, hear or feel that lets you know you have achieved your goal?

3.  Have you defined, divided it into small enough steps that you can achieve the first step easily?

What is that first step?

4.  Can this be started, initiated by you?

     Can you control it?

     If someone else is in charge and controls any aspect of your goal it is not a well formed outcome and you need to go back to #1 and rethink your goal with this in mind.

5.  What resources do you need to achieve your goal?

6.  Are you willing and motivated enough to acquire the necessary resources?

7.  When will you start?

8.  What will having this outcome do for you?  What are the positive consequences of getting this outcome? 

9.  Are there any negative consequences to getting your outcome?  What are they?  Are you sure you want your outcome with these negative consequences?

10.  How will reaching your goal affect other people?

11.  What stops you from having your outcome now?  If this goal has been something you have thought about in the past what has stopped you from moving forward?

Now go back over your paper and clean up anything that is unclear or need reworking.
